The degree premium is not universal
Averages hide the truth. Yes, degree holders out-earn non-degree holders on average, but that average is dragged upward by medicine, law and engineering and dragged downward by fields with poor employment outcomes. Compare specific jobs instead of averages and a different picture appears: a commercial property agent, an underground miner, a crane operator or a software sales executive can out-earn a large share of degree-qualified professionals within five years of starting.
Add the cost side and the gap widens. A four year degree costs both tuition and four years of foregone income. Someone earning from year one and compounding savings and experience can be tens of thousands ahead before the graduate has started their first full-time role.
Where the money actually is
Three clusters dominate. The first is commission sales: cars, property, solar, software and medical devices. Base pay is modest, but total earnings scale with your close rate, and nobody checks your transcript. The second is resources, energy and logistics: mining, drilling, rigs, cranes, heavy machinery and long-haul freight, where pay is inflated by remoteness, shift patterns and safety-critical licensing rather than by study. The third is licensed trades, where a paid apprenticeship replaces tuition entirely and self-employment lifts the ceiling.
What all three have in common is a verifiable proxy for competence that is cheaper than a degree: a sales record, a licence or ticket, or a completed apprenticeship. Employers are not paying for education, they are paying for reduced risk. Find the cheapest credible signal in your target field and buy that.
The trade-offs to go in with your eyes open
High pay without high qualifications almost always comes with a compensating cost: physical wear, unsocial hours, time away from family, income volatility, or a ceiling you hit sooner. Commission roles pay brilliantly in a good market and poorly in a downturn. Resource work pays for the roster, not the task. Trades pay well until your body objects, which is why the smart ones move into supervision, estimating or ownership by their forties.
Plan the exit ramp at the start. Bank the early high income, add a supervisory or business qualification while you are earning, and treat the physical years as capital formation rather than a permanent identity.
